How to convert video to audio by using free MediaCoder Audio Edition

My search for a free and powerful video to audio converter started a couple of months ago when I downloaded some music videos from Youtube but wanted to play them on the CD player in my car.

The search ended up with the free and open source software MediaCoder Audio Edition and it has been proven to be a great experience with it. MediaCoder has millions of users from 170+ countries all over the world. You can't go wrong with it. MediaCoder Audio extracts audio tracks from video files.

In this article, I'm going to show you how to convert a Youtube music video to an audio file so that you can play it in a normal CD player or on your computer.

Step #1: Download a Youtube music video

There are a couple of ways to download videos from internet, e.g. Youtube website. Refer to article How to download videos from Youtube for more info.

Step #2: Download and install MediaCoder.

MediaCoder Audio Edition is a free and open source software that nicely integrates many media codecs and tools into an all-in-one software. It extracts audio tracks from video files and convert them to almost all popular audio formats.

Step #3: Convert video to audio

Based on what quality of the audio file, you can choose two most popular ones - MP3 or WAV.

If you want to match the original recording, convert the video to WAV audio format rather than MP3 or others. This is .wav is uncompressed audio format that stores and archives the original recording. In other words, WAV encodes all sounds, whether they are complex sounds or absolute silence, with the same number of bits per unit of time. The downside of converting to WAV is that the size of the audio file is much bigger than MP3. But this does not matter if you burn the WAV file as audio CD because Audio CD is time-based, not size based. See Why MP3 disk does not play in your car CD player for more info.

Here are steps of converting a video to audio by using MediaCoder Audio Edition.

3.1 Open MediaCoder Audio Edition.

3.2 Select the video file you want to convert.

Click the Add button on the top left corner of MediaCoder main user interface and then click Add File.

Note that you can convert multiple video files in a batch by adding a folder. This comes in handy if you have downloaded multiple videos from Youtube and want convert them together in one go.

3.3 Select an output folder where the converted audio file will be saved to.

On my computer, I have a folder for image output where converted images are saved to. So I just use that folder for the video as well.

3.4 Choose the target audio format in Audio tab. The default Encoder is LAME MP3.

Here are some popular audio format in Encoder dropdown and their audio file extensions.

  • FAAC - .aac
  • CT AAC+ - .aac
