Program Details:

Index.dat Suite is a rather unique program that allows you not only to delete the index.dat files, temporary internet files, temp files, cookies and history, but it also allows you to view the index.dat files on your system.

index.dat related features:

  1. Search index.dat files on all drives or on selected drive only.

  2. Export all index.dat file path info: save to clipboard, save the result, print the result.

  3. View contents of index.dat files by using internal viewer or external viewer.

  4. Export contents of index.dat files.

    • Copy to clipboard (single URL only).
    • Save the entire URL list to a file.
    • Print the entire URL list.

  5. For each URL found in index.dat file, it can be opened in default web browser or opened in a Free Webpage Dissection page.

  6. Delete index.dat files by generating a batch file that will be used to delete the index.dat files the next time you restart Windows.

  7. Delete only selected index.dat files. File(s) not checked in the search results will not be deleted.

How to delete index.dat files

The way to delete all the URLs (either real URLs or local file path) in index.dat files is to delete all the index.dat files themselves. Because index.dat files can't be deleted after Windows has started, to perform the deletions, Index.dat Suite requires computer reboot or log off and log back in.

Before you re-start Windows, you must go through the following steps to set up a batch file that is used by Windows to carry out deletions after it re-starts.

Pre-requisite: Assume you have not changed any settings in index.dat Suite.

  1. Search all the index.dat files on all drives.

  2. After you have found all the index.dat files, click the "Generate File" button on the toolbar (Shortcut Key: CTRL+G).

  3. Index.dat Suite will now generate the batch file that will be used to delete the index.dat files. The batch file by default is located at C:\run.bat

Once the generation is complete, you will see the following message:

  4. Now re-start your computer or log off Windows and log back in again.

After you log in Windows again, deletion commands in the batch file run.bat will be executed automatically. index.dat files will be deleted and Windows will automatically re-create them but with empty contents in them.

Commands used to delete index.dat files would look like this. Note: only the index.dat files you have selected in the search results will be included in the batch file.

del "C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\Cookies\index.dat"
del "C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\History\History.IE5\index.dat"
del "C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\History\History.IE5\MSHIST~2\index.dat"
del "C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\History\History.IE5\MSHIST~1\index.dat"
del "C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\History\History.IE5\MSHIST~4\index.dat"
del "C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\TEMPOR~1\Content.IE5\index.dat"
del "C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\UserData\index.dat"
del "C:\DOCUME~1\WEB-01\ASPNET\Cookies\index.dat"
del "C:\DOCUME~1\WEB-01\ASPNET\LOCALS~1\History\History.IE5\index.dat"
del "C:\DOCUME~1\WEB-01\ASPNET\LOCALS~1\TEMPOR~1\Content.IE5\index.dat"

If you don't want Windows to delete index.dat files every time when it re-starts, you can remove the batch file and the corresponding RunOnce registry entry. Use menu item: Tools -> Batch File Generation -> Delete Both (or Delete batch file, Remove RunOnce entry).

How to view index.dat file contents

To view the contents of an index.dat file:

  1. Select one of the index.dat files from the search results.

  2. Right click it and select View file contents -> Using internal viewer (Shortcut Key: CTRL+V). Or, you can click the View File Contents button on the toolbar.

Other deletion operations

Index.dat Suite can do more than just index.dat related operations. The following is a list other things the suite can do:

  • View and delete Temporary Internet Files (TIF)
  • View and delete Cookies
  • View and delete History

These extra deletion operations are included as part of the batch file generated above. If you do NOT wish to have these extra deletion included in the batch file, you will need to de-select them in the Index.dat Suite settings (Folders tab).
